Frequently Asked Questions

Test & Tag is a process used to assess the safety of portable electrical equipment in the workplace. It helps identify damaged or faulty equipment before it causes injury, property damage or unexpected downtime.

It forms part of a broader workplace safety and risk management strategy, helping businesses demonstrate that reasonable steps are being taken to manage electrical risks.

Regular testing and accurate records can also provide evidence of a proactive approach to workplace safety, which may be valuable for audits, insurance assessments and WorkSafe investigations.

Test & Tag involves a visual inspection of the electrical equipment, followed by electrical safety testing using specialised equipment. Devices that pass are fitted with a test tag showing the date tested and the next due test date.

Results are recorded in an electronic asset register and test report for your records.

Most portable electrical equipment used in the workplace should be regularly inspected and assessed for electrical safety.

This may include:

  • Computers and monitors

  • Printers and photocopiers

  • Power boards and extension leads

  • Kitchen appliances

  • Portable heaters and fans

  • Vacuum cleaners

  • Hand tools

  • Audio-visual equipment

  • Charging equipment and power supplies

If you're unsure whether an item requires testing, we're happy to provide advice.

Testing intervals vary depending on the type of workplace, how equipment is used, and the level of risk involved.

Common testing intervals include:

  • Offices and administrative workplaces: up to 2 years

  • Hotels, motels, holiday rentals and short-stay accommodation: typically 12 months

  • Workshops, warehouses and other commercial workplaces: 6 to 12 months

  • Construction and demolition sites: 3 months

We can advise on the appropriate testing interval for your workplace in accordance with AS/NZS 3760 and AS/NZS 3012.

In most cases, no.

Testing is carried out with minimal disruption to your workplace, and power to the building does not need to be switched off. Most items are out of service for only a few minutes while testing takes place.

The time required will depend on the number and type of items being tested.

If an item fails either the visual inspection or electrical safety test, it will be tagged as failed and recorded in the test report.

This does not necessarily mean the equipment needs to be replaced. In some cases, simple repairs may return the item to service safely. We can provide advice on the most appropriate next steps.

Yes.

Upon completion of the work, you'll receive a detailed electronic test report and asset register showing all tested equipment, test results, failed items and retest dates. These records can assist with compliance, asset management and workplace safety documentation.

The cost of Test & Tag depends on the number and type of items being tested, the site location and any additional services required.
